Aspra.mente
I really appreciate when a project doesn't need to be defined with useless borders and this is the reason why I really like Aspra.mente and their interventions.
You should put in a mixer 4 clever minds, artists, curators, cooks, and even gardeners to produce something that could taste close to them. Aspra.mente is a project born in Venice from a workshop, but soon became something different: a group in which each member has her own identity, goes on with her works, travels and brings each time something new to the whole group.
Their projects mainly focus on food design connected to social practices, but here (again!) is quite hard to draw a line that could separate their work from other art practices. one of their most interesting installations, called Vaccinium, was least year on view at Manifesta 7, the european Biennal that took place in Italy, in Trentino Alto Adige. the work focused on one of the less famous products of that territory, the blueberry. (Trentino Alto Adige is really famous because of its apples, actually). The linear and clear installation included some wallpapers that explained to the spectators the benefits of the blueberry and what really impressed me positively was the total "understatement" appearance of the whole installation, which underlined the content of the project.
Their last intervention took place in a contemporary art exhibition called Quotidiana09, in Padua. the exhibition is the result of an open call on the whole italian territory for artists under 35, and Aspra.mente were chosen as part of the most representative works of young artists in italy.
For their work, Flower Salad, they planted a big variety of edible flowers in the garden of the building that hosted the exhibition. people could take some of the flowers and use them to cook their own recipes, or even take inspiration from the recipes on the blog that was created especially for the intervention. The whole installation was a site specific intervention especially made for Quotidiana09 and was indeed appreciated by the public of the exhibition. Their presence helped the whole exhibition to underline how different and wide can be the definition of art practices today, in Italy as well.
I can't wait to see what's next!
